Cultural Foundations of Education (CF) is a rigorous interdisciplinary graduate program concerned with the study of educational policies and practices from social, philosophical, historical, and comparative perspectives.

Individualized programs are designed to provide educators and policy makers in school and nonschool settings with the knowledge and skills necessary to interpret educational policies and analyze educational activities in various situations.

Coursework is offered at both the Master's and doctoral levels and students come from a variety of backgrounds in education, the social sciences, the humanities, and the arts. Comfortable with crossing many kinds of boundaries (academic, economic, agency, etc.), our alumni have enjoyed success in finding (or sometimes creating!) jobs in school systems, higher education, foundations, policy research, and government agencies.

Students may focus on a number of areas in the foundations, including equity, educational reform, democracy and education, moral education, multicultural education, international education, and education and the environment. While all major foci are interdisciplinary, doctoral work may include coursework in appropriate departments and programs outside of the College and Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Services.

Degrees Offered:

  • Master of Education (M.Ed.)
  • Master of Arts in Education (M.A.)
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Ph.D.)
